FUNCTIONS

Language functions, refer to the purposes in which we use language to communicate. We use language for a variety of formal and informal purposes, and specific grammatical structures and vocabulary are often used with each language function. Some examples of language functions are:
  • Compare and contrast
  • Persuasion
  • Asking questions
  • Expressing likes and dislikes
  • Agreeing/disagreeing
  • Greeting people

Its important to have clear , that  the exponents of a language, are the ones that shows different  levels of formality ,and the same exponent may involve  the use of more than one function at the same time.

When teaching about language functions, it is important that we as future teachers,  teach the vocabulary and phrases associated with each language function. For example, if we have to teach the the language function of greeting people, we must teach specific vocabulary that would be useful for the topic.

During the lesson, on the planning and preparation stage, we should brainstorm the vocabulary words associated with the language function that will be taught. It is important that students become familiar with the vocabulary associated with the topic and use of it,  not isolated from the context.

Once we take all this aspects into account, we are ready to tecah how language works and its function to the students, but we must be sure what we are teaching. During the topic we could have a clear view of the difference among context, exponent and function, and why its important how we use our language in terms of  the register we apply.

The next video would make us reflect on the imporantce of how we speak or communicate with others, and how one single word can change the whole idea.
